About the Sumter Area

Lively Community and Local Arts

Throughout the year, Sumter holds regular festivals. One, during Memorial Day weekend, is one of the longest ongoing festivals in the state. Other annual festivals include the Festival on the Avenue, which celebrates West African Bimbé heritage, and the OktoberFest on Main, which celebrates German Heritage.

Live performance venues are varied in Sumter, with options to see an opera or a play. Art galleries showcase artists from the local to the international scale. The Sumter County Museum provides history on the area, the history of the local Jewish community and Sumter’s connection with the Holocaust, and classes for all ages.

Access to Nature Parks

Sumter is within an hour or less of numerous lakes and state parks. Manchester State Forest is less than 30 minutes away and allows hunting and fishing, hiking, four-wheeling, and more. Less than an hour away, Santee State Park has access to Lake Marion. Lake Wateree State Park is just over an hour away, while the 11-mile Palmetto Trail: Wateree Passage is about 30 minutes away. Congaree National Park, with campsites and laid back trails, is less than an hour away, and Lake Moultrie and Lake Murray are less than an hour and a half away.

Multiple In and Outdoor Markets

Supporting local farmers and artisans is made easier in Sumter with multiple farmers and flea markets. The Downtown Market and Sumter Farmers Market run seasonally May through September and November through April, respectively.
