Camp Cole is a camp and retreat in the South Carolina founded for the purpose of creating a safe, accessible and inspirational gathering place where groups can connect, share, encourage and shine. After years of fundraising efforts, the founders of Camp Cole, Kelsey Sawyer Carter and Margaret Deans Fawcett Grantz who both lost loved ones as children to cancer, made their incredible dream a reality and had their first campers in July of 2021.
Hurricane Builders is a residential builder in South Carolina composed of a team of staff and Realtors. On Builder Appreciation Week, Hurricane Builders Lake Carolina team (Donna Stevens, Bruce Stevens, and Donna Sue Jones) graciously coordinated a Pelican’s SnoBalls visit to Camp Cole, which happened to be the first week that the camp was open with campers. As a result of the Pelican’s SnoBalls visit, the Lake Carolina team entered Hurricane builders for a $1,500 contribution from New Home Star, which was donated to Camp Cole in honor of Hurricane Builders.
The week that the check was presented to Camp Cole was a week designated specifically for children who have suffered from homelessness. “All of the kids here this week have experienced some form of homelessness,” said Camp Psychologist Elizabeth Buckner. “We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to the campers and one child said “You mean we get THREE meals a day?” It was a tear-jerking moment of realization for all who listened to the stories about the campers.
Hurricane Builders appreciates the opportunity to give back and immediately began discussing how they could do more upon their departure.
